Method of Fault Analysis

  1. Characterize the problem.
  2. Reproduce the problem.
  3. Find further information.
Fault Analysis: Hypothesis
  1. Form a series of hypotheses.
  2. Pick a hypothesis to check.
  3. Test the hypothesis.
Method of Fault Analysis, Again
  1. Note the results, then reform or test a new hypothesis if needed.
  2. If the easier hypotheses yield no positive result, further characterize problem.
Fault Analysis : Gathering Data
  1. tail -f logfile.
  2. *.debug in syslog.
  3. --verbose or –debug option in application.
Network Tools Troubleshooting
  1. ping.
  2. traceroute.
  3. telnet.
  4. netstat.
  5. nmap.
  6. tcpdump.
  7. iptables.
Analyze your system
  1. Disk usage.
  2. Memory.
  3. Apps Process.
  4. Port Listen.
The simple step
  1. Copy paste your error to google.
  2. Ask your friend, forum and etc.
Learn from concept
  1. OSI Layer.
  2. About linux and your service (http, dns, ftp).
  3. Some language (python, bash, php and etc).
